Improve Your Closet Light With Recessed Lights

When most people think of recessed can lights they think of entryways and hallways, but one of the most effective uses for any style of recessed lighting is in the closet.  Closets are small spaces where every inch of space is important. In many closet designs, maximizing that limited space can be achieved through the use of closet organizers. Being so, having lights hanging from the ceiling just doesn’t make any sense.  In this post I want to share with you some tips for using this style of light to make your closet a much easier to navigate place!

Closets of all sizes can benefit from having some extra light, but walk-in closets get the biggest advantage.  In most newer homes, long fluorescent tube lighting is installed when the home is built, but this type of light is not attractive and can be very harsh on the eyes (especially first thing in the morning!).  Instead, smartly placed recessed closet light can make a huge difference.

Other than making sure that you have enough clearance in the ceiling to fit these lights in your walk-in closet, there are some other things that you need to consider.  Recessed lights don’t do a great job of spreading light across the area, so you may need to install a few of them if your walk in closet is large.  The best places for installing these are going to be wherever you would most likely stand while browsing through your clothing selection.

Light bulbs like tungsten and halogen are going to provide a natural closet light that won’t shock your eyes in the morning, while still being very energy efficient.  They also don’t heat up as much as traditional incandescent bulbs do, so your closet won’t become a sauna in the hot summer months.

Installing or improving the lighting in your closet will make a big impact in its functionality and appearance.  Recessed lighting is a much better choice than the standard fluorescent lights that came with the home because of their sharp design and improved performance.  Spend the time to plan out the location of the closet lights so that you can be happy with them for as long as you live in your home!
